THE MATERIAL’S CHARACTER

Patterns in stone, memories of courtyards.

River pebbles bring rounded shapes and varied colours to paving. In traditional pebble paving they form panels, borders and patterns; sawn versions retain the stone’s outline with a more even face. Flat and round pebbles offer other textures, to be chosen with the way the space will be used in mind.

Round, flat or sawn?

Round pebbles create a raised surface; flat pebbles are selected for their naturally flat shape. Sawn pebbles have two flat faces and a thickness of approximately 2 cm. They are also bought differently: sawn pebbles are ordered per square metre, the other selections per 100 kg, with coverage depending on the laying method.

BEYOND APPEARANCE

A good floor
starts with good design.

Hardness and surface

Pebble describes a shape and alluvial origin, rather than a single rock. The composition may be mixed: assigning one Mohs rating to all river pebbles is incorrect.

Resistance and use

Performance depends on the selected rocks and installation. In pebble paving, anchoring, joints and surface evenness also matter; a rounded shape does not certify wear resistance.

Points to assess before laying

Choose round, flat or sawn pebbles according to the required walking surface. Plan the laying method and joints; to convert 100 kg units into square metres, use the coverage for the specific size and laying orientation.

USEFUL QUESTIONS

Before you choose.

What is the difference between pebble paving and sawn pebbles?

In traditional pebble paving, the natural stones retain their rounded surfaces and are laid to a pattern and a common level. Sawn pebbles have two flat faces: the stone’s irregular outline remains, with a different walking surface. Assess the choice using a sample and the intended route.

How much material is needed per square metre?

The linked sawn pebbles are sold per square metre. For pebbles sold per 100 kg, use the coverage stated in the specific product details: size and laying on edge or flat change consumption. Coverage for one selection should not be applied to others.

Can they be used for a driveway entrance?

Suitability for vehicle access depends on size, laying depth, anchoring, the sub-base and loads. Share these details with the supplier and technical adviser before ordering. For frequent pedestrian use, also assess surface relief, joints and transitions.
